Steak & Eggs Diet Diary: June 2025

South Korea
I’ve been maintaining an animal-based diet in Korea. Due to Korea’s history of poverty and a period of heavy reliance on grains and vegetables, there’s still a strong preference for vegetables (especially kimchi) and carbohydrates although the economy has grown rapidly and people can now eat meat. Meat is a bit pricey in Korea. With over 70% of Korea’s terrain being mountainous, it’s not ideal for livestock farming. As a result, domestically raised Hanwoo beef tends to be very expensive. To get meat affordably, buying frozen meat online or shopping at Costco are good options. I’ll probably eat a lot of imported meat in daily life. Another issue is that many restaurants and franchises in Korea don’t disclose ingredient lists, making it hard to get information on which menu items to order to avoid seed oils, sugar, or processed foods when dining out with friends. Since public transportation is well-organized and there are many diverse restaurants, I’ll likely eat some non-animal-based foods with friends or family from time to time. Still, my default diet will be animal-based foods.



Costco
Surprisingly, Korea also has Kirkland grass-fed butter, unpasteurized cheese, and imported ground beef. Not every store has them, but I was so relieved to find ground beef and unpasteurized cheeses (Parmesan Reggiano, Comté, Grana Padano) commonly available. Since Costco’s products are incredibly affordable, I plan to grocery there once a week or every other week. It takes a while to get to Costco and park, but being able to buy meat and cheese cheaply makes it worth visiting often.

The Costco Yangjae branch, which has the highest sales worldwide, was so crowded on weekends that parking was difficult, and I could barely move inside the store.



Coconut Oil Pulling
June 20, 2025: Before bed, I started oil pulling by swishing a spoonful of coconut oil in my mouth for 1 to 20 minutes. I read online and in books that it’s good for dental health and whitening, so I’m giving it a try. I’m not sure what the results will be, but I’m excited to see how it turns out after a few months.
